All permanent cosmetic procedures are a multi-session process. You are required to come back for at least one touch-up visit before it can be determined that your work is complete. Touch-up visits are scheduled at 4-6 week intervals or longer.
Be prepared for the initial color intensity of your procedure to be significantly sharper, brighter, or darker than what is expected for the final outcome. It will take time for this transition based upon how quickly the outer layer of your skin exfoliates.
While these tattooed colors may initially simulate the exact color and tone desired, they will not always remain a perfect match. Tattooed colors are constant, while your own skin color will vary depending on exposure to cold, heat, sun, and circulatory changes. For example, if your skin tans and you had a scar camouflage, your surrounding skin will become darker in appearance than the treated area.
Since delicate skin or sensitive areas may swell slightly or redden, some clients feel it is best not to make any social plans for a day or two following any procedure. It is always best to avoid these procedures within months prior to important life events such as weddings. Procedures may take longer than expected to be complete under some circumstances.
Wear your normal make up or bring your brow pencils to your consult, but you do not have to for your procedure. Please do not wear mascara to an eyeliner procedure.
Any tweezing or waxing should be done at least 48 hours prior to the procedure; electrolysis no less than 5 days before. Do not resume ANY method of hair removal for at least two weeks.
Any eyelash or eyebrow tinting or eyelash curling should be done no sooner than 48 hours before, or two weeks after the procedure.
Avoid alcohol or caffeine prior to the procedure, this will minimize any oozing or swelling after the procedure.
Getting a procedure while on your menstrual cycle can make you hyper-sensitive at the procedure site.
DO NOT wear contact lenses during or within 48 hours following the eyeliner procedure. Remember to bring your glasses. You may resume wearing your contact lenses as soon as your eyes return to their pre-tattooed condition.
Refrain from the use of alcohol, aspirin, aspirin-containing medications, ibuprofen, or other blood-thinning medications for seven days before and two days after any procedure. Refrain from judgment-altering drugs or vitamins for at least 24 hours prior to any procedure. No medication should ever be discontinued without first consulting your physician. A skin test is offered upon request.
Do not work out the day of the procedure as the body heat expands the pores. It is recommended not to sweat (heavily) for the first 10 days after the procedure. Sweat is salt and can prematurely fade the treated area.
IF YOU USE BOTOX, IT SHOULD BE PERFORMED EITHER 2 WEEKS PRIOR TO YOUR SCHEDULED PROCEDURE OR 2 WEEKS AFTER YOUR PROCEDURE.
FILLERS SHOULD BE DONE 6 WEEKS PRIOR TO YOUR SCHEDULED PROCEDURE OR DONE 6 WEEKS AFTER THE PROCEDURE.
You have to be off Accutane for 1 year.
You CAN NOT be pregnant or breastfeeding to have permanent cosmetics.
AFTER CARE INSTRUCTIONS
Proper care following your procedure is necessary to achieve the best results. Keep in mind that in many cases, some unevenness of color is to be expected. The purpose of the touch-up visit is to correct any color or shape issues. Please review the following directions and refer to them as necessary. If during your healing process you have any questions or concerns, please contact us.
Ice packs protected with a cloth may be applied as necessary to reduce swelling. Sleeping slightly elevated helps alleviate swelling sometimes seen in the morning after facial procedures. Do not use ice packs on lip procedures.
Wash your hands before touching any treated area. Cotton-tipped applicators may be used to gently cleanse the eye area. Do not expose the area to dirty or unsanitary conditions. Wearing glasses outdoors is a good way to protect new eyeliner from dust, ect.
Some itching is normal. DO NOT PICK, PEEL, OR SCRATCH the treated area or your color may heal unevenly and you risk scarring and infection.
No makeup is to be applied for 72 hours (three days) after the procedure on the tattoo area. After any eyeliner procedure, use new mascara for the first 10 days after the 3 days of no makeup. Do not use an eyelash curler for two weeks.
Do not expose your healing skin to direct shower spray, skin creams, ointments, or lotions other than what you have been instructed to use for at least 3 days following your procedure.
Do not expose your healing skin to direct sun, tanning beds, hot tubs (tub bath if body area treated), saunas, salt water, chlorinated pools, or extremely hot water for 2 weeks following your procedure.
It is important to realize that you will need a color boost every 1-3 years to maintain it’s fresh natural appearance. If you are out in the sun a lot, have oily skin, use anti-aging creams, Retinol products, natural elements, regular chemical peels, or exercise frequently, you will probably need a color boost every 6 months to 1 year. The better you take care of the treated area, the longer it will last.
Avoid sleeping on your face during the 1st 10 days after the procedure.
You MUST be off Retin-A or Retinols for 7 days prior to your appointment and avoid using on or around the area for 30 days after. If used before 30 days, it can cause the pigments to fade prematurely. If you resume the Retin-A or Retinols after the 30 days, please know that the continued use will fade your permanent makeup prematurely.
If you have oily skin, your results WILL appear softer (eyebrows can look solid) in appearance and may require additional procedures. Dark Skin types please note that your permanent makeup will not appear as bold as lighter skin types. (Indian, African American, Filipino, etc.)
EYEBROWS
Come to your appointment with your eyebrows penciled the way you like them (optional) if you like & bring your eyebrow pencil with you.
If you get your eyebrows waxed or tinted, please have this done at least 72 hours prior to your scheduled procedure. It is recommended to wait at least a week to have them waxed after the procedure.
Regular makeup can be worn immediately after your procedure, just not on the treated area until healed. Absolutely NOTHING on the brows..no makeup, lotions, pencil….etc. for 10 days….Remove the old Vaseline daily with a gentle cloth and reapply a thin layer. After the 10 days, use a gentle cleanser to clean them. Avoid scrubbing them for 1 month.
The eyebrows WILL appear bolder immediately after the procedure..this is common in all Permanent Makeup applications…it will begin to soften up after a few days. Hair strokes appear crisp and bold at first, but will soften up as the tissue heals.
It is very common to have areas fade more so than others..this is part of the healing process and will be treated at the recommended touch up appointment. Previously done eyebrows may take 1-3 treatments to achieve the desired result. Scar tissue in the brow area of eyebrows done multiple times WILL require additional procedures and fees will apply. Only use the Vaseline (a very thin coat, if you see it, you have too much on) on the treated area for 10 days.
Clients with darker skin (Indian, African American, Filipino, etc.), Please know that the Hair Strokes and Eye Liners WILL NOT appear as defined or as dark as lighter skin types due to the skin color already being naturally darker.
EYELINER
If you have had any eye surgery, i.e.; Lasix….Cornea..Upper or Lower Blepharoplasty…..Lens repair….. etc. you will need to wait at least 6 months before I will do permanent makeup on your eyes and a Dr’s note may be requested. If you have tear duct plugs, I do not do the liner procedure.
IF USING AN EYELASH GROWTH SERUM (Latisse) OR THERE LIKE, YOU MUST DISCONTINUE USE 2 WEEKS PRIOR TO PROCEDURE AND CAN NOT USE UNTIL 2 WEEKS AFTER PROCEDURE.
IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO INFORM ME OF ANY EYE SURGERIES YOU HAVE HAD OR EYE CONDITIONS YOU CURRENTLY HAVE AS THIS WILL DETERMINE IF YOU ARE A GOOD CANDIDATE FOR LINER.
If you have hyper-sensitive eyes, watery eyes, tear duct plugs or severe allergies, refractive eye surgery etc..this may not be the procedure for you… our eyes produce saline-salt water and this will cause the area treated to fade or not take at all.
Do not wear contact lenses to your appointment, bring your glasses
Come with your eyeliner on if you like to show me how you want it otherwise come with no eye makeup on. No mascara.
Clean contacts can be worn 72 hrs after the procedure. You cannot use Saline to wet the eyes. Only Sterile Water…check that the wash is NOT SALINE..it will fade the liner out instantly.
No mascara for 72 hrs after the procedure, you can tip the lashes with the mascara, do not take it all the way to the skin until 10 days after the procedure.
It is recommended to buy a new tube of mascara to use after the procedure to reduce the risk of infection.
DO NOT USE oily makeup remover, baby oil, mineral oil or heavy creams, especially glycolics around the eyes.
Only use the Vaseline provided to you after the procedure for 10 days, or as needed, you cannot over use them.DO NOT USE TOO MUCH VASELINE ON THE LINER AS IT CAN IRRITATE YOUR EYES, IN THIS CASE, MORE IS NOT BETTER.
Eyeliner can and will have some residual pigment that may peel or flake off after a couple days(in most cases)..that is ok..eyeliner tends to fade more so than brows due to the moisture in the eye area. After the touch up the color stays better and lasts longer….Eyeliner will take 2-3 procedures!
LIPS
Be careful as you pull on shirts or other garments over your face that you don’t brush the new tattoo accidentally. Also, don’t put any makeup on, particularly just after treatment. You might cause an infection or otherwise damage the tattoo. In the case of food, it may be challenging for a while to eat with tattooed lips, but it can be done. Avoid biting or licking your lips as much as possible, and make sure no food or drink stays on there.
Aftercare: Avoid Contact with Clothing, Makeup, Food and Sunlight. Take care not to expose your face to the sun for about two weeks after you get your tattoo. The sun will fade the pigment, which is still settling into your skin. Even after the tattoos have healed, be consistent with applying sunscreen to those areas of your face, to avoid fading. Lips can take 1-3 treatments for desired depth of color. Keeping lips moist daily will lengthen the time the pigment will last…everyone heals different.
Very Important: If you get cold sores or have ever had one in the past, you will need an antiviral prescription from your doctor before a lip procedure. Physicians usually instruct to take it 2 days before. As this procedure will bring out the virus if not medicated beforehand.
LONG TERM CARE
Use a good sunscreen daily- even lips require protection. Sun exposure will fade your permanent cosmetics and may cause irritation even years later.
If you are planning chemical exfoliation, or other medical procedure, please inform your physician of your cosmetic tattoo.
It is important to realize that you will need a color boost every 1-3 years to maintain it’s fresh natural appearance.
APROXIMATE HEALING SCHEDULE FOR PERMANENT COSMETICS
Eye Brows
Day: What to Expect:
1-2 What you see is about 20-60% darker, bolder, and more solid than what your healed result will present. There may be minimal swelling; however as the eyebrow area typically does not retain much fluid, swelling will be limited. The top layers of skin will begin to shed about day 3-5 and you will see a loss of color. This is normal.
3 Your eyebrows may begin to itch and the pigment may appear somewhat raised. DON’T SCRATCH THEM!
4-6 Your skin is now in rapidly exfoliating and if left alone, will shed evenly. The color under the skin will continue to appear light until the epidermis becomes more transparent.
30-40 Your eyebrows have had a full cycle of cellular regeneration in which the tattoo has now become part of the dermis, seen under the epidermis.
Eye Liner
Day: What to Expect:
OF This can vary from slightly puffy to swollen, heavy lids; light sensitive and possibly bloodshot eyes. It’s advisable to sleep in an elevated position to help reduce swelling at night.
1 Eyes will be swollen and perhaps a bit ‘crusty’ upon waking. The swelling will reduce after being in an upright position and from blinking and increased circulation to the area. Avoid heavy lifting, physical exertion, and crying.
2 Eyes will be less swollen, but will feel tight. The lash area will feel sore if touched.
3-4 The top layer of skin will begin to flake off in little stitch looking lines, although some people do not notice the exfoliation. DO NOT PICK– you will pull pigment out and end up with uneven color. Blinking helps eliminate the small pieces of pigment and epidermis that has detached. It is important not to pick at it or rub the eyes.
7-9 All shedding should be complete. You are safe to put your face back in the shower spray. During this time, the tattoo may appear to have vanished, this is a normal part of the healing process, and the pigment will re-emerge.
10 Pigment, if it faded, should have returned. What you see now is very close to the healed result. If it is not as you like, please wait the final three weeks and return for a touch-up procedure.
NOTE: The outcome of permanent cosmetic procedures is dictated by the canvas (your skin). The better condition your skin is in, the better the final result will be. Very oily, dry, or sun damaged skin can be very difficult to achieve a beautiful even result. Mature clients may need an additional one to two weeks healing for the final results to appear.
The better you take care of your skin and protect it from UV rays, the better the outcome and lifespan of the permanent cosmetics procedures.
LIP COLOR
Day 1: Swelling, tender, heavy thick lipstick look with a reddish brick color effect.
Day 2: Slight swelling, reddish and tender with a metallic flavor.
Day 3: Less swelling, thicker texture, sore, hot feeling before exfoliation with an orange color effect.
Day 4: Exfoliation begins, very chapped lips.
Day 5: Very chapped, but almost finished with first chapping stage.
Day 6: A soft, rich color begins to appear.
Days 7-13: Lip color disappears and the “frosty” (2 chapping stage) begins as a whitish haze on the lips.
Day 14: Color “blooms” from within more and more each day until day 21 (3 weeks post procedure)
Day 21: Healing complete; the color you see is the color you have. Your lips will remain a bit dry for a month or two. Use a good balm and they will return to normal, but with full color.
Note:
Permanent makeup procedures are affected by the canvas (your skin) that they are performed on. If your skin is sun damaged (even from tanning beds), thick and uneven in texture, and/ or excessively dry or oily, the result cannot be expected to be perfect after the initial procedure. Scars on the lips from fever blisters or blisters after a procedure can cause pigment removal. Lifestyle, medications, smoking, metabolism, facial surgery, and age of skin, all contribute to the healing and fading. Color refreshers are sometimes needed to ensure the best results and to keep your permanent makeup looking the best.
TATTOO LIGHTENING
Proper care following your procedure is necessary to achieve the best results. If during your healing process you have any questions or concerns, please contact us.
Expect the Tattoo Lightening procedure to be a multi-step process. It is likely that you will have to come back for more than one treatment. Additional visits should be scheduled no sooner 2-3 months from the last treatment. Keep in mind that in many cases the tattoo may fade unevenly. Please review the following directions and refer to them as necessary.
Be prepared for the initial color intensity of your procedure to be significantly brighter or darker, you will also notice it may appear very purple, blue, or red immediately after the procedure. This should fade as it heals. Depending on the tattoo, the area may darken before it fades. It will take time for this transition based upon how the tattoo was applied, what it was applied with, and your own natural healing.Proper care following your procedure is necessary to achieve the best results. If during your healing process you have any questions or concerns, please contact us.
Ice packs protected with a cloth may be applied as necessary to reduce swelling. Do not put ice directly on area, make sure there is a towel or cloth between the ice and your skin.
Bleeding and bruising is expected the first day or two after the procedure.
Wash your hands before touching any treated area. Do not expose the area to dirty or unsanitary conditions.
Itching and scabbing is normal. Once the scab or a dark crust forms allow it to peel off naturally. DO NOT PICK, PEEL, OR SCRATCH the treated area as it could cause scarring or changes in the natural skin color. Removing the scab could also increase healing time. If the tattoo is located in a high friction area, or if you have a tendency to scratch, cover with a bandage. Do not shave over the treated area until all scabbing has healed.
If the removal is on the face, no makeup is to be applied for 72 hours (three days) after the procedure. After any eyeliner procedure, use new mascara. Do not use an eyelash curler for two weeks.
Do not expose your healing skin to direct sun, tanning beds, saunas, salt water, chlorinated pools, skin creams, ointments, or lotions other than what you have been instructed to use for 2 weeks following your procedure.
The treated should remain as dry as possible for at least three days. You may continue to shower, and you can gently wash the treated area with mild soap and water, but pat dry it as soon as possible (do not rub). Do not expose the area directly under a shower spray, no scrubbing the area, do not swim or sit in a spa, and do not soak your body where the area is submerged in water.
If itchiness develops and is irritating, you may apply an anti-itch ointment after the first week of treatment or bandage or tape over the area. Excessive scratching on the treated area may cause additional irritation and possible scarring.
If the color is not completely faded after procedure, the process may be repeated after the skin has healed, usually about 2-3 months.
The treated area can be re-tattooed after the skin has healed, usually after 2-3 months.
NOTE: The outcome of tattoo lightening procedures is dictated by the canvas (your skin) as well as the implementation process and materials used in the original tattoo. Clients should have realistic expectations as Susana Volkmann may not be able to achieve the desired results for tattoo lightening.
